How income tax works in British Virgin Islands

The BVI does not tax individuals through a personal income-tax schedule. Salary, freelance income, interest, dividends, rent, foreign income and capital gains are not subject to ordinary BVI PIT, although the source country or the individual's country of residence may tax them.

Payroll tax applies to local remuneration paid by employers and to self-employment. Remuneration is broad and can include salary, bonuses, allowances, benefits in kind, fees, profit-sharing and severance. Class 1 applies where payroll, turnover and headcount all remain within the statutory limits; other employers are Class 2.

Class 1 payroll tax is 10% of the tax base and Class 2 is 14%. The employee portion is generally 8%, while the employer portion is 2% for Class 1 or 6% for Class 2. The first $10,000 of annual remuneration is generally exempt once, through the primary or longest-standing employment.

Watch out for

  • Payroll tax returns are generally filed monthly, with the return and payment due within 21 days after the month to which the tax relates. Annual returns and payroll records are also required.
  • A second job generally does not receive a second $10,000 exemption. Self-employed people can be liable for the full combined payroll-tax rate because they represent both sides of the contribution.
  • Social Security and NHI are separate from payroll tax. For 2026, Social Security contributions are 8.5% up to $53,400 of insurable earnings and NHI is 7.5% up to $106,800.

Frequently asked questions

Do expats pay income tax in the BVI?

The BVI does not charge ordinary personal income tax to expats or residents. An expat working locally can still have payroll tax, Social Security and NHI deducted or paid on their behalf.

How does BVI payroll tax work?

Payroll tax is 10% for Class 1 employers and 14% for Class 2 employers, including self-employed persons. Usually 8% is the employee share, the first $10,000 is exempt once, and the employer pays the balance.

Is foreign income taxed in the BVI?

The BVI's official tax guidance states that foreign income is not taxable in the BVI. The person's tax-residence country can still tax that income under its own law.
