How corporate tax works in British Virgin Islands
The BVI does not levy a general corporate income tax on BVI business companies. The BVI Business Companies Act exempts companies, amounts paid by companies and capital gains on their shares, debt obligations and securities from the Income Tax Ordinance, subject to specific land-related stamp-duty rules.
There is generally no BVI withholding tax on dividends, interest, royalties or other ordinary outbound distributions. This is a local tax result, not a guarantee that the source country, shareholder's residence country or an intermediate jurisdiction will not tax the payment.
The zero-rate position sits alongside economic-substance rules, beneficial-ownership and financial-account reporting, annual company fees, trade licences and payroll tax where the company employs people or carries on business in the Territory.

Watch out for
- No corporate income tax does not remove the need to satisfy economic-substance rules for relevant activities such as holding, finance, intellectual property, headquarters, fund management, shipping and distribution or service-centre business.
- A company with local employees can create payroll tax, Social Security, NHI and trade-licence exposure. A company owning BVI land or shares in a land-owning company can also fall outside ordinary corporate stamp-duty exemptions.
- The BVI's FATF increased-monitoring status and EU AML high-risk classification can affect bank onboarding, correspondent banking, investor diligence and transaction timing even though they are not corporate taxes.
Frequently asked questions
Does the BVI have corporate income tax?
No general corporate income tax is charged by the BVI on ordinary BVI business companies. The company can still face payroll tax, licences, regulatory fees, substance filings, stamp duty and foreign-country tax.
Do BVI companies pay tax on dividends or interest?
The BVI generally does not impose withholding tax on dividends or interest paid by a BVI company. The recipient's country and the payment's source country may impose their own tax.
Is a BVI company automatically tax-free everywhere?
No. The BVI's local zero-tax result does not override foreign CFC rules, management-and-control tests, permanent-establishment rules, transfer pricing, withholding tax or beneficial-owner requirements.
