Tax system in British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands does not levy personal income tax, general corporate income tax, capital gains tax, net wealth tax, inheritance tax or gift tax. That headline applies to the BVI tax system; another country can still tax a person or company under its own residence, source or controlled-company rules.

The main tax on local work is payroll tax. Class 1 employers pay 10% of taxable remuneration and Class 2 employers pay 14%; the employee share is generally 8%, with the balance paid by the employer. The first $10,000 of an employee's annual remuneration is exempt, subject to the multiple-employer rules.

The practical tax bill can also include Social Security, National Health Insurance, property tax, stamp duty, customs duty, 10% hotel accommodation tax, 5% self-drive motor-vehicle rental tax, trade licences, liquor licences and other sector charges. The BVI does not have a general VAT or sales tax.

Watch out for

  • BVI's 0% direct-tax position does not mean zero cost. Payroll tax, Social Security, NHI, property tax, stamp duty, customs duty and business licences can be material for people operating locally.
  • The BVI has been under FATF increased monitoring since June 2025, with progress reviewed in 2026. It is also in the EU's Annex II state-of-play document and is listed by the EU as a high-risk third country for AML purposes, so banking and compliance can be more demanding.
  • A BVI company is not a substitute for tax residence or substance where its owners, directors, employees, assets or customers are located elsewhere. Foreign CFC, management-and-control, withholding and anti-avoidance rules may still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Does the British Virgin Islands have income tax?

No personal income tax is charged in the BVI. Local employees and self-employed people can still pay payroll tax on BVI remuneration, plus Social Security and National Health Insurance contributions.

Does the BVI have corporate tax?

The BVI does not levy a general corporate income tax on BVI business companies. Companies operating locally still need to consider payroll tax, trade licences, economic substance, regulatory fees, stamp duty and foreign-country taxation.

Is the BVI tax-free?

No. The BVI is tax-neutral for many forms of income, profit, gains and wealth, but it raises revenue through payroll, property, stamp, customs, hotel, vehicle-rental and licence charges.
