How wealth tax works in Uruguay

Uruguay's Impuesto al Patrimonio is an annual net wealth tax, not a one-time asset levy. It can apply to individuals, succession estates and companies, and the tax base is generally the net value of assets after limited deductions.

For individuals who are resident or subject to IRNR, the headline rate is 0.1% on local net wealth, while non-resident individuals who are not under IRNR are taxed on a progressive scale from 0.7% to 1.5%.

Companies and business owners generally pay 1.5% on net assets located or economically used in Uruguay, with a 3% rate for assets connected with low-tax jurisdictions. Some liabilities are deductible, but the debt deduction rules are narrower than a normal balance sheet.

The tax-free threshold for individuals is indexed annually. For the 2025 tax year, the official minimum non-taxable amount was UYU 6,653,000 for individuals and succession estates, doubled for family units.

Watch out for

  • The minimum non-taxable amount is adjusted by decree. The latest official threshold published in early 2026 was for the 2025 tax year, so check the current DGI amount before filing.
  • Not all liabilities are deductible. Uruguay limits which debts can reduce the wealth tax base, especially for individuals.
  • A home used as the taxpayer's dwelling gets a partial deduction, but the cap and valuation rules still matter.
  • Companies can credit corporate income tax against wealth tax, but the offset is capped.
