How wealth tax works in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has no general annual net wealth or net-worth tax on an individual's bank accounts, securities, private-company shares or crypto assets simply because they are owned. That is different from a business Zakat calculation, which uses a statutory Zakat base and can produce a 2.5% charge for qualifying Zakat payers.
Property ownership is not subject to a broad personal wealth tax, but property transactions can trigger 5% RETT. The Kingdom also has white-land fees for qualifying undeveloped land in designated areas, and the 2025โ26 framework can use development-priority bands rather than one universal rate.
High-net-worth individuals and family offices should therefore separate annual ownership taxes from transaction taxes, business Zakat, VAT, withholding tax and any tax imposed by another country where the person, company or asset is connected.

Watch out for
- A 0% personal wealth-tax headline does not make every asset or entity tax-free. Business Zakat and property-related charges can still be material.
- White-land fees are not a universal tax on every plot. The location, land use, ownership, area, development status and current ministry designations all matter.
- Another country can still tax worldwide assets or investment income if the owner remains tax resident there.
Frequently asked questions
Does Saudi Arabia have a wealth tax?
Saudi Arabia does not impose a broad annual personal net wealth tax. Business Zakat and property-related charges are separate and can still apply.
Does Saudi Arabia tax bank accounts and investments?
There is no general annual wealth tax on personal bank balances or investment portfolios. Business activity, income source, disposals and foreign tax residence can produce a different result.
What are Saudi white-land fees?
White-land fees are property-related annual charges for qualifying undeveloped land in designated areas. The current framework can apply different development-priority rates, so the 2.5% statutory headline is not the only number to check.
