How inheritance tax works in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia does not impose a standalone inheritance tax, estate tax or general gift tax on wealth passing at death. The absence of a death tax does not mean succession is automatic: heirs, wills, debts, probate-style procedures and the legal status of each asset still matter.
The Saudi Personal Status Law sets rules for wills and inheritance, including the order in which estate rights are handled and limits around bequests. Families with non-Saudi heirs or assets outside the Kingdom must also check the law of the asset's location and the heirs' home countries.
A transfer of real estate can be a separate tax event. RETT is generally 5% on qualifying real-estate transactions, but the regulations contain exemptions and special treatment for some gifts, inheritances and family transfers. The transaction should be registered with ZATCA before conveyance.

Watch out for
- No inheritance tax does not remove Saudi succession rules. A will, asset register and clear ownership records can reduce delays for bank accounts, property and company shares.
- A real-estate gift or inheritance should be checked against the RETT exemptions and documentation requirements before the transfer is registered.
- Foreign heirs can face inheritance, estate or gift tax in their own country even where Saudi Arabia charges no standalone death tax.
Frequently asked questions
Does Saudi Arabia have inheritance tax?
No standalone Saudi inheritance or estate tax applies to assets passing to heirs. Succession still follows Saudi legal rules where they apply, and foreign tax can arise elsewhere.
Does Saudi Arabia have gift tax?
Saudi Arabia does not have a standalone general gift tax, but a gifted property transfer can require RETT analysis and may qualify for an exemption only if the regulatory conditions are met.
Do expats need a will in Saudi Arabia?
Expats with Saudi bank accounts, property, company interests or dependants should consider formal succession planning. Tax is only one issue; access to assets and the applicable personal-status rules can be more important.
