How dividend tax works in Paraguay

Paraguay taxes profits, dividends and similar distributions through the IDU. The tax applies when a Paraguayan company, partnership or similar entity distributes profits to its owners or shareholders, and the payer must withhold and remit the tax.

The rate is 8% for Paraguayan residents and 15% for non-residents. The obligation is monthly, and the company must issue the corresponding withholding documentation.

Not every value transfer is a dividend. The tax rules distinguish ordinary dividend distributions from items such as certain capital reductions and some employee profit-related benefits.

Foreign dividends are not the same thing as a Paraguayan IDU distribution. Their treatment depends on the source-country rules and the taxpayer's wider residence position.

Watch out for

  • IDU is a withholding tax, so the company's bookkeeping and payment timing matter as much as the rate.
  • If the shareholder is non-resident, the tax rate is higher at 15%, and source-country taxes can still reduce the cash you actually receive.
  • Keep dividend approvals and distributable-reserve support clean; not every balance-sheet movement qualifies as a dividend.

Yes. The company paying the dividend is responsible for withholding and monthly filing of IDU.
