How wealth tax works in Oman

Oman does not currently impose a general annual tax on an individualโ€™s net worth. Cash, listed investments, private-company interests, crypto assets and foreign assets are not taxed simply because they are owned.

Ownership is different from income or a transfer. Rent, business profits, dividends, gains, VATable supplies and future PIT income can be taxed under their own rules. Real-estate sales, gifts and title registrations can also create transaction charges even when no wealth tax is due.

The 2028 PIT law is an income tax, not a net wealth tax. Its deductions and exemptions include socially targeted items such as primary housing, inheritance, education, healthcare, zakat and donations, but executive regulations and the actual income source still matter.

Watch out for

  • No wealth tax does not make Omani property tax-free. A 3% registration fee is listed for sales and gifts from third parties and relatives outside the first degree, and other title, municipality or transaction charges may apply.
  • Residential rent can be exempt from VAT while the rental income can still be relevant for income tax or the future PIT law. VAT treatment and income-tax treatment should be analysed separately.
  • A person who remains tax resident elsewhere can still owe tax on worldwide assets or investment income in that other country. Omanโ€™s 0% wealth-tax position does not break foreign residence.
  • Banks, brokers and other counterparties may still request source-of-wealth and tax-residence evidence even though Oman does not impose an annual net-worth tax.

Frequently asked questions

Does Oman have a wealth tax?

No general annual net wealth or net worth tax currently applies in Oman. Income, gains, property transactions and VAT are separate questions.

Are foreign assets taxed in Oman?

Oman does not tax the value of foreign assets through a wealth tax. Income from those assets and the future PIT rules can still matter, especially for a person resident in Oman or a company carrying on taxable activity.

Does Oman tax property ownership?

There is no broad annual personal wealth tax on property ownership, but property transfers and registrations can carry charges, and rental income, commercial supplies and foreign tax rules may create separate liabilities.
