How inheritance tax works in Oman
Oman does not currently levy a standalone inheritance tax or estate tax on assets passing to heirs. There is also no broad gift-tax regime equivalent to a dedicated tax on lifetime transfers of cash, securities or other wealth.
That does not make succession frictionless. An inherited or gifted Omani property may need title, registration and legal steps, and the Ministry of Housing schedule lists a 3% registration fee for sales and gifts from third parties and relatives outside the first degree. The exact transaction and relationship must be checked.
Royal Decree 56/2025 lists inheritance among the socially targeted deductions or exemptions in the future PIT system. That future income-tax treatment should not be confused with inheritance tax: tax can arise later when an inherited asset produces rent, business income or a taxable disposal.

Watch out for
- No inheritance tax does not remove the need for a will, asset register and succession plan. Property, bank accounts, company interests and assets in other countries can follow different legal procedures.
- The 3% figure is a property-registration charge in listed sale and gift cases, not a general inheritance tax. Do not apply it automatically to every inheritance or every family transfer.
- Foreign heirs may face tax, reporting or probate obligations in their own country even when Oman charges no inheritance tax.
- An inherited asset can later generate taxable rent, business income or a disposal gain. The tax treatment at that later stage is separate from the tax treatment of the inheritance itself.
