Overview & Benefits

Colombia's digital nomad route is the Visa V Nomadas Digitales. It is not a generic open-door nomad visa. Officially, it is limited to foreigners from countries or territories that are exempt from Colombia's short-stay visa requirement, and it is built for remote work from Colombia for foreign employers or clients.

That last part matters. The visa also covers entrepreneurs starting digital-content or information-technology projects that are of interest to Colombia, which makes it more useful for founders than many people expect. But it still does not authorize paid work for Colombian-based people or companies.

The practical income test is simple:

  • Main applicant: 3 SMLMV / month

At Colombia's 2026 minimum wage of COP 1,750,905, that comes out to about COP 5,252,715 per month. The key document is usually 3 months of bank statements showing the income flow, not just a contract on its own.

The route is attractive because it is fairly generous on paper: the visa can be granted for up to 2 years, and beneficiaries are allowed. The trade-off is that Colombia is strict about the passport filter and the local-work restriction. If your business model relies on Colombian clients, this is the wrong visa.

Colombia also has a useful shortcut for some travelers. If you are from a short-stay visa-exempt nationality and your stay does not generate payments from Colombian companies, you may be able to enter without the visa and stay under a Permiso de Ingreso, up to 180 days in a calendar year. That is good for short stays, but it is not the same as holding the digital nomad visa.

Tax-wise, this is not a special nomad regime. DIAN's normal residence rule still matters: staying more than 183 days in a 365-day period can make you tax resident. So the visa solves immigration status, not tax planning.

There is one more useful hard rule: after the visa is issued, you should register it with Migracion Colombia within 15 days and get the foreigner ID step done if required. That is easy to miss, and it can create unnecessary friction with banks and landlords later.

For founders and digital nomads, Colombia is a solid option if you want a two-year Latin America base, your income is clearly foreign, and your passport is eligible. If any of those three pieces is weak, the route stops being simple very quickly.

Main Requirements

To qualify for the Visa V Nomadas Digitales, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must hold a passport from a country or territory that is exempt from Colombia's short-stay visa requirement.
  • The visa is for remote work from Colombia for foreign employers or clients, and for entrepreneurs launching digital-content or information-technology projects of interest to Colombia.
  • You cannot take paid work or services from a person or company domiciled in Colombia under this category.
  • You must prove income of at least 3 SMLMV, supported by bank statements from the last 3 months.
  • You need health insurance or a health policy with coverage in Colombia for the full stay, including accident, illness, maternity, hospitalization, death, and repatriation.
  • If you are an employee, a company letter or contract in Spanish or English is the cleanest proof. If you are a founder, you need a motivation letter explaining the project and the resources behind it.
  • Beneficiaries are allowed. The current beneficiary definition covers a spouse or permanent partner and dependent children up to age 25, or older children with a qualifying disability.
  • After approval, you should register the visa with Migracion Colombia within 15 calendar days and obtain a cรฉdula de extranjeria where required.

Reality Check: Rejections & Delays

Real Approval Difficulty

Medium. The income test is straightforward, but the nationality filter and the local-work restriction make this narrower than many people expect.

Actual Timeline

The official rules give the authority up to 30 calendar days to decide, and then up to 10 business days after payment to issue the electronic visa once approved.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Your passport is not from a visa-exempt nationality.
  • Bank statements do not show 3 SMLMV for the last 3 months.
  • The work looks like local Colombian employment or services.
  • The entrepreneur case is vague and not clearly tied to digital content or IT.
  • Health insurance is missing or does not cover Colombia properly.
  • The file is inconsistent, incomplete, or the supporting letter does not match the bank trail.

Biggest Downside

The main failure mode is misreading the route: it is not open to every passport, and it is easy to break the rules by mixing in Colombian-source work.

How to Apply (Step by Step)

2

Prepare The Evidence

Gather the company letter or contract, bank statements, health insurance, and, if you are a founder, a clear motivation letter for the project.

3

Submit The Online Visa File

File the application through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs platform and keep your status regular if you are applying from inside Colombia.

4

Register After Approval

Once the visa is issued, register with Migracion Colombia within 15 days and complete the foreigner ID step if required.
