Golden visa

Plain-language definitionGolden visa is an informal term for a programme offering residence rights in return for a qualifying investment, donation, or economic contribution. Rules, investment routes, physical-presence requirements, and renewal conditions are country-specific.

How golden visa works

A golden visa buys neither a tax home nor a tax exemption. It is an informal label for residence-by-investment programmes: a country grants an investor immigration rights if they meet a prescribed investment or contribution route and ongoing conditions. Those rights may be useful for mobility, family residence, or a future citizenship path, but they sit in immigration law.

Tax residency is decided separately. A country may look at days present, available accommodation, family, work, and the centre of life. It is entirely possible to hold a residence permit but not meet local tax-residence tests, or to be tax resident despite a permit that requires little physical presence. The country you left may also continue to treat you as resident until its departure conditions are met.

Before committing capital, compare the programme's legal investment, lock-up, fees, renewal, and due-diligence requirements with its actual tax consequences. Check whether the investment itself produces local income, wealth, inheritance, or capital-gains exposure. A golden visa can be a useful immigration tool; it should never substitute for a two-country tax-residence plan.

Also keep the permit's minimum-stay rules separate from the days you actually spend in each country. The latter are what usually matter when a revenue authority tests residence.

Why it matters for founders and expats

  • Immigration planning and tax planning are separate. A permit can be held without becoming tax resident, and local presence can still create tax residence.

Practical examples

Low-presence permit

An investor may satisfy a visa's minimum stay yet become resident elsewhere under that other country's domestic tests.

Common misconceptions

A golden visa makes me tax resident.

Not necessarily. Tax residence follows tax law, not the programme's marketing label.

Frequently asked questions

Is a golden visa a tax break?

No. Some countries also have tax regimes, but they require separate eligibility and elections.
