How dividend tax works in Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein does not levy a general withholding tax on dividends, interest or royalties. A Liechtenstein company can therefore generally pay a dividend without deducting domestic dividend withholding tax.
Dividends and liquidation proceeds are generally exempt for individual investors and corporate shareholders. For participations of 25% or more held as business assets, the exemption can depend on the payment not being deductible in the source country.
Anti-abuse rules can deny exemption for foreign entities where more than 50% of income is passive and the entity is subject, directly or indirectly, to low taxation. Dividends received from private assets have their own correspondence rule and should not be reduced to a generic holding-company slogan.
A Liechtenstein resident can still suffer withholding tax in the country where a foreign company is incorporated. Treaty claims, beneficial ownership, reporting and the shareholderโs other residence country remain separate questions.

Watch out for
- Zero Liechtenstein withholding tax does not mean a foreign companyโs country will withhold nothing. Source-country law and treaty paperwork can be the largest cash-flow issue.
- Dividend exemption is not a substitute for substance and anti-abuse analysis. Low-taxed foreign companies with predominantly passive income can fall outside the exemption.
- A dividend is separate from the companyโs own 12.5% corporate tax. The company must first calculate taxable profit, distributable reserves and any applicable minimum or Pillar Two tax.
- The 4% deemed return on a resident shareholderโs net wealth can still create personal tax even where the actual dividend is exempt.
