How capital gains tax works in Belize

Belize does not operate a broad standalone personal capital gains tax like many countries do. For individuals, that means there is no general Belize CGT regime on the sale of shares or other personal assets.

The caveat is at company level. Belize's Income and Business Tax Act taxes receipts and includes a specific annual net gain computation at 5%; Belize Tax Service continues to require an annual business-tax return from companies formerly known as IBCs. Company structures can therefore still be taxed on asset gains even where there is no separate personal CGT.

Property disposals can still trigger land transfer tax or stamp duty, so the tax cost of a sale is often transfer-based rather than capital-gains-based.

Watch out for

  • Donโ€™t confuse no standalone CGT with no tax at all. Belize can still tax company receipts and charge transfer taxes on real estate.
  • The annual-net-gain line applicable to companies formerly known as IBCs makes those company structures materially different from a simple private investment account.
  • Foreign tax residence can still tax the same gain elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does Belize have capital gains tax?

Belize does not have a broad standalone personal capital gains tax regime. The main caveat is that company structures can still be taxed through business tax rules.

Are share sales taxed in Belize?

Not through a general personal CGT system. But company-level rules, transfer taxes and foreign tax residence can still matter.

Are property gains taxed in Belize?

Belize usually taxes the transfer rather than the gain itself. Land tax and transfer tax are the main property-side checks.
